Layers. 2005-2008

The common view of the Sussex landscape is a romantic one, with the rolling green hills of the South Downs and aesthetically pleasing landscapes of managed farmland. Over 50% of the county has been designated as areas of outstanding natural beauty. Postcards and books reveal medieval castles, quaint villages, white cliffs, and pebble beaches.

Nestled in and around these areas of natural beauty are pockets of space that punctuate the general flow of the Landscape. I have set out to investigate these spaces, and how they interact with the landscape around them. They are often raw, messy and unresolved yet seem neatly contained within their own boundary. They show the relentless pursuit of humankind to extract, shape and regenerate our surroundings.

These spaces are not on the grand scale of the industrial North, they are relatively small and understated but still nonetheless just as intrusive. Concentrating on the periphery of these incongruous areas allows the sites to be contextualised within their wider surroundings. The images then become descriptive and the assembled parts start to reveal layers of history.

All images come in 2 sizes. 50x40in and 20x24in.
