DEGENERATION. Format Photography Festival 2011.

Date posted: 20.01.2011

Human Endeavour have been invited to exhibit as part of the Collectives Encounter at Format International Photography Festival 2011. Yasmina Reggad curator of the exhibition writes "Since 2009, Photo-Festivals is collaborating with Format International Photo Festival to bring together some of the most talented and active collectives of photographers to celebrate and promote this emerging culture in the UK. During the past 10 years, photographers have been developing a new form of working, discussing and sharing their personal work. The collective is not only a dynamic platform for photographers to guarantee their independence and identity, but also a creative hub to produce collective artwork. This blog is dedicated to the work in progress of the 6 collectives which members are based in the UK. You can follow here the development of their respective artworks commissioned by Yasmina Reggad, curator of the exhibition The Flaneur.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION, THE FLANEUR FORMAT 2011s theme is Right Here, Right Now: Exposures from the public realm and is curated around the theme of street photography, examining the relationship that photographers and filmmakers have to it through a wide variety of approaches. Within this theme, the Collectives Encounter 2011 exhibitions curator Yasmina Reggad has decided to explore the concept of The Flaneur. She invited collectives working with or about photography and related media to look at this concept through the lens of this mobile observer and aesthete that Walter Benjamin presented as a conceptual and analytical tool to think about the modern city.

Following the success of Collectives Encounter 2009, this second editions exhibition will showcase four new commissioned artworks by ASA & Wideyed, The Photography Collective, Vea Collective and Rawiya, and the reformulation of existing work Degeneration series by Human Endeavour. From this starting point, the exhibition questions different characters of the flaneur translated into an artistic method of the exploration of the city as the best laboratory to study human nature and social processes.

While producing a space delimited by an endless flaneurie, Asa and Wideyed collectives are mapping the flaneur. They deploy a tactic of participation and special practice of the city in order to reveal multiple trajectories of interpretation and representation of the urban reality. From there, Vea collective, deliberately deviating from their ordinary life and with a calculated passivity, take a stroll around artificial temples of leisure and idleness. With them, the flaneur becomes a voyeur and takes the shape of a detective. Then, The Photography Collective loiter at a corner of the city and through their gaze into the crowd. They sketch a physiology of the fl‰neur, and turn the boulevard into an interior to eventually shift back to a world of constantly reflected observers in the city of merchandise. The mystery of the crowd vanishes with the advent of surveillance and identification of individual and housing. Human Endeavour hit the pavement of social housing complex and shed light on the impossibility of flaneur to resist the Degeneration of postmodern urbis planning. Where does the flaneurie end? What are its limits when the better field of the straller is its mobility and his freedom of movement? Rawiya are studying these restrictions in to hostile social, economical, political and cultural environments." Curator: Yasmina Reggad

DEGENERATION.(Architecture of Urban Discord) Urbanautica.

Date posted: 26/11/10

My project Architecture of urban discord has been featured on the international photography magazine Urbanuatica. Steve Bisson from Urbanuatica writes about the project, "Some time ago Richard Chivers positively surprised us with his photographic series Texture of Time. In this new work he consistently continues with his disenchanted research on urban issues that pertain to his country. His own words describe well the reasons and objectives of the project, which is part of a thematic survey developed by the group of photographers Human Endeavour. Images that speak of loneliness, abandonment and failure. A failure that is not of the economy, it is ours. Chivers tell us of the collapsed dream of a community. A community dies when it has no longer a storyteller. In this sense Chivers continues to keep alive the memory of the community through his photography. Yet what he portrays is a story not at all pleasant. He does not feel alien to what happened; he is there to document, to witness and perhaps to find some answers, guided as much by his conscience as anything else. Whose fault is it when a place loses its dignity? Maybe this place has never had one. Places are never defined by their walls, pavement or even less by some stunted tree. Inhabitants build them. Even now that they have been abandoned these sites seem to be identified more by the forgotten objects than by what remains of buildings. Again, we find traces of the crisis of modernity. An epoch certainly not kind but bulimic and also seemingly rational, as it was the construction machine that acted as loyal bishop. The humanity is gone however, and will not return except to leave again. Chivers, with this dramatic lyric, reminds us that the community should begin again to be the responsible creators of their own development, instead of being the unwitting victims of cyclical economic downturns."
